The other day I was listening to the radio in my car and heard an interview with a lady called Genelle Guzman-McMillan who was the last survivor pulled from one of the twin tower buildings. She had written a book that is called ‘Angel in the Rubble’ and is all about the 27 hours she spent pinned under the tangled mess of steel and concrete. She wasn’t a Christian before the terrible event but she became one because of it. While trapped in the darkness she cried out to God time and time again. Just before the rescue crew got to her a man came to her through the hole that her hand was stretched out in and said his name was Paul. He comforted her and placed his hands around her one outstretched hand that was free. When the rescue crew finally pulled her out she asked about this man called Paul but no one knew of anyone by that name. She believes that it was an Angel. He had no gloves on which all the fire crew were wearing and was there before they got to her.

The Bible says that Angels can come to us as men and this kind of story is not unusual.

“Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” Hebrews 13:2

*Mark Buntain was a missionary in India. He built an orphanage, church and needed a hospital in Calcutta. But tragedy struck the region. Torrents of rain came down, forcing the government to evacuate much of the city. Mark reluctantly boarded the evacuation plane. Questions whirled through his mind, "Will this flood wipe out all of his work for the poor?" He felt dejected. He did the only thing he knew to do--which was to pray. A man sat next to him in the plane, and began to encourage Mark. He told him that everything was going to be all right. He even outlined several steps that Mark could implement that would make his ministry even more effective. After talking with this man, Mark was greatly encouraged. The stewardess came by and asked Mark what he would like to drink. Mark gave his order and then turned to see what the man would order, but to his amazement, the man was gone. He vanished! Mark searched all over the small plane looking for the man, but he was not in there. Mark realized he had been visited by an angel.

When Bernice and I were in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe during the Bush war there were many occasions when people said that Angels came to their aid. A pastor in our Church, was coming back alone from a conference in South Africa during the war. He was really feeling tired and needed to stop, but feared that he would be attacked by terrorists if he did, being in such a remote area. He decided to battle on through the night, but was falling asleep. After nearly hitting a bridge he saw a huge Angel standing in the middle of the road in front of him. He stopped the car and the Angel touched the top of his head twice and then disappeared. It was as if a supernatural strength had entered into his body, and he was now wide awake. He was sure that if he were to hit the side of the car door with his fist it would have flown off its hinges onto the road. When he got home to Gweru he decided to go to sleep, but couldn’t, so he stayed awake and then through to the next day. He tried to sleep the next night too and couldn’t either. He wondered what would have happened if the Angel had touched him on the head 5 times??

On another occasion I heard of an elderly Christian farming couple in a very remote area. Terrorists were all around and were attacking farm houses at night. This couple were in contact with the other farmers by radio, and had been warned that the “terrorists” were on their way towards them. The Christian couple prayed that night for God’s protection and with God’s help made it through until dawn. The next morning these terrorists were caught, and on questioning them, the armed forces found that they had come to this particular couple’s house, but had decided to turn away. The “Terrorists” said that they didn't attack this house because there were many strong men all around it clothed in shining white armour. God had sent His God Squad, "Angels".

There is a whole unseen world out there that contains thousands upon thousands of Angels and they are here for our protection and guidance.

“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;” Psalm 91:11

“The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.” Psalm 34:11

"See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” Matthew 18:10

I have a couple of views that I believe can encourage the presence of Angels in our lives. In the Old Testament people actually saw Angels and spoke to them. In these days it’s more a walk of faith for most of us mortals. One scripture comes to mind that backs this view up.

Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." John 20:29

Our walk in this dispensation is more of a walk of faith, and God is asking us to believe what He says in the word. He says all these things about Angels and wants us to believe it even if we can’t see them most of the time. In the Old Testament people spoke to Angels and I also do this personally asking them to do things for me as well. Jesus said that there was an Angel for each Church in Asian Minor and if this was so then there must be an Angel for our Church here in Eltham. "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:” Revelation 2:1

If I am praying for someone in New Plymouth, I often ask the Angel of the Church in that city to dispatch help to the person who is in need. I believe that Jesus loves the whole principle of delegation and wants us to involve others in the ministry and that includes Angels.

I can’t see anything wrong with asking Angels to come to our aid, that’s what they are there for. Jesus is called Captain of the Host (Angels). Jesus gave the Church the keys of the kingdom of heaven. He said,

"Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." Mat 18:8

Most of us have heard this scripture used to "bind" the devil and demons. And the Bible does tell us that we can "bind the strong man", and that a mighty angel will "bind the devil for a thousand years". The word "bind" is a term to describe our power to "tie up" Satan. However, Jesus also said that we have the power to "loose". And what do we loose? Certainly, not Satan. Then who? It’s Angels of course.

A voice said, "Loose the four angels which are bound...And the four angels were loosed" Revelation 9:14-15 KJV.

You can readily see that Angels are meant to be loosed. And who has the power to loose angels? Jesus said that we do. We have the keys of the kingdom! You might ask the question, "How do we loose Angels?" There are interesting scriptures in the Psalms and also in Hebrews.

“Bless the LORD, you His angels, who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding the voice of His word.” Ps 103:20

“Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” Hebrews 1:14

We see here that Angels are given to minister for us and they also hearken to the word of God. We are God’s mouthpiece here on earth so it important for us to speak the word of God as much as we can for Angels obey that word. As we speak forth what God has to say about a situation then it invokes Angelic help. It says Angels hearken or heed the voice of God which means to listen and act upon. We are the ones who are to speak out or be the voice for the Bible here on earth. We can loose God’s Angels and also bind them by speaking negative words like. “Nothing ever works out for me.” “If I didn’t have such bad luck.” Can it also be that fallen Angels (called Demons) are hanging around, waiting to respond to the negative words that we speak?

If Angels hearken to the words of God and we aren’t speaking out His word in faith, then we have a lot of unemployed Angels hanging around. Jesus said.

"Whoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God" Luke 12:8,

Jesus declares to the Angels what we declare. When we confessed that Jesus was our Lord, Jesus confessed to the Angels that He was our Lord. Angels are aware of what we confess here on earth. Jesus echo's our words to the Angels, and depending on what we say, they bring to pass our words. One of the believers favourite Psalm says,

"If you make the Most High your dwelling--even the Lord, who is my refuge--then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone" (91:9-12).

God promises complete protection for the person who makes the Most High his dwelling. The secret to tapping into the power of this Psalm is to make the Most High your dwelling. That is the key. God promises protection, so long as you make the Most High your dwelling.

So how do you make God your dwelling? The answer is at the beginning of this Psalm. It says,

"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I WILL SAY OF THE LORD, `He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'"

You make the Most High your dwelling the same way that David did--by SAYING OF THE LORD that He is your dwelling! Your confession that He is your refuge and fortress is what makes God become your refuge and fortress. And what does God do when you confess that He is your refuge and fortress? He commands His Angels to guard you in all your ways so that no harm befalls you nor any disaster overtake you. Angels work for you because you confess who God is to you and what He will do for you.

There is one final verse I want to show you that will prove that Angels are greatly affected by our words.

Psalm 34:7: "The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them."

The Angel of the Lord delivers those who fear God, not who fear tragedy. And what does it mean to fear God? Verse 11 and 12 begins by telling us,

"Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days." Psalm 34:11-12

Angels definitely are involved in prolonging our lives and making our days good. But what is the fear of the Lord? The next verse says that if you want many good days, then,

"keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies." Psalm 34:13

The fear of the Lord is manifested in restraining the tongue. If you fear God, then you will speak the truth. And what is truth? Jesus said, "Thy word is truth!" God's Word is the highest form of truth in the universe. By speaking God's Word, you are keeping your tongue from evil and from speaking lies. And when you do, the Angel of the Lord will encamp around you to deliver you in times of trouble. This Angel will do this because you show the fear of the Lord by speaking His Word!

Many years ago, about 1896 or 1897, a Bible colporteur was walking down Market Street in San Francisco when a stranger stopped him and asked him why he did not take his Bibles and books to a certain valley beyond Sacramento.

The colporteur explained that he had never heard of the valley, but would be glad to go when he could find the time. Then the stranger bade him goodbye, and disappeared in the crowd.

"That's strange!" the colporteur said to himself, "I wonder why that man spoke to me? How did he know my business? And why is he interested in that particular valley? I must try to go there some day."

But the busy days and weeks slipped by and the colporteur didn't go. Yet somehow, he couldn't forget what the stranger had said. Every now and then a voice seemed to say to him, "Go to that valley."

At last he felt he should wait no longer. So he set forth on his journey, taking his Bibles and books with him.

It was a long and tiring trip, for there were no autos in those days. Part of the way he went by train, part on horseback, part on foot.

Coming to a wide river, which had not then been bridged, he wondered how he was going to get to the other side. As he waited at the water's edge a man appeared in a rowboat and asked if he wished to cross.

"I surely do," said the colporteur. "How much will you charge to take me over?"

"A dollar," replied the man, and the colporteur agreed. On the way across, the colporteur opened his purse and brought out a silver dollar. It was the only one he had and, having time on his hands, he looked at it with more than usual care. It was a new coin, bright from the mint, but marred by a scratch on the eagle. The date on the coin was 1896.

Arriving at the other side, the colporteur gave the boatman the silver, dollar and bade him good-by.

"Be sure to call at the first cottage you come to up the valley," said the boatman, as he pulled away.

"I will," said the colporteur, wondering what this might mean, and what he would find there. Soon he caught sight of a cottage On a hillside about a mile or so ahead, and walked briskly toward it. To his surprise, as he drew near the cottage, the front door opened and three children started running down the hill toward him, "Did you bring our Bible?" they cried. "Did you bring our Bible?"

"Your Bible!" he exclaimed. "What do you mean? How did you know I have some Bibles?"

"Oh," they cried, "we've all been praying for a Bible but mother didn't have the money to buy one till today. But God sent her the money, so we felt sure He would send us the Bible soon,"

By this time they were at the house, and then mother was there, all flushed and excited, waiting to tell her story of what had happened. "It's true," she said, "We have wanted a Bible so long. We've been praying for one for many months but somehow could never afford it. Then this afternoon, just after we had all prayed again, a voice seemed to say me, Go and look outside the front door, So I opened the door and there, lying on the ground, was a silver dollar. It seemed so wonderful I felt sure God had sent it, and that the Bible would come soon. Sir, does your Bible cost a dollar?" "It does," he said, "just a dollar,"

Opening his case, he took out a Bible and handed to the mother, who in turn passed over to him the dollar she had found that very afternoon.

Now it was the colporteur's turn to be astonished. Something about the dollar arrested his attention. It was newly minted, but had a scratch on the eagle. And the date was 1896!

"Is there something wrong with it?" asked the mother anxiously.

"No, no," he said. "But, madam, this is the identical dollar I gave to the boatman this very afternoon, less than an hour ago!" "What boatman?" she asked. "At the ferry." But there's no ferry; never has been, as long as I've been here."

"But he brought me across the river this very afternoon, and told me to come to this cottage; and I gave him this same silver dollar!" So they talked on, going over it all again and again, marveling how God works "His wonders to perform."

The mystery of that silver dollar will perhaps never be solved. But both the colporteur and that godly woman were convinced, as I am, that God was in this thing. He knew of the longing of the dear mother and her children to read His Word; and in His own wonderful way He made it possible for them to receive it.

And if you wonder about the stranger and the boatman, remember that Abraham of old "entertained angels unawares."

As we get nearer to the 2nd Coming of the Lord, I believe there will be much more activity in the angelic realm. This Christmas you’ll hear many verses from scripture about the birth of Christ and in nearly all of them Angels will be mentioned. Angels spoke to Joseph in dreams; they also spoke to Mary and Elizabeth along with the shepherds just to name a few. It seems that before any great event Angels are used to herald its arrival and it will be no different with the Lord's 2nd Coming.

Angels are not usually visible to the human eye, but they are working around us in the spirit realm. The bible shows us that there is a lot going on behind the scenes in our lives both good and bad that we are not usually aware of and Angels are involved; both good ones and bad. There is a lot of interference from fallen Angels that try and stop the blessings of God.

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:12

There is a woman called Lisa Williams who is being advertised on TV at present, she is coming to New Zealand and has become famous for contacting the 'dead'. Little does she realise that she is actually contacting fallen Angels who are demons and not dead people. The Bible says that we need to be very careful in our Christian walk for Satan can appear as an 'Angel of Light'. In other words the Devil doesn’t always appear as evil but can do ‘good’ things.

“And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” 2 Corinthians 11:14

Lisa says that she hears ‘them’ speak to her clearly, and then comforts those who have lost loved ones, but that doesn't mean she is a servant of God. There is also a magician on TV called Criss Angel who seems to have some amazing powers that defy logic; again I believe this is demonic. There seems to be an upsurge in the demonic lately and this is all because something big is about to happen - The Return of Christ. The Bible says that the Devil will be trying hard to deceive people at the Time of the End.

“But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short." Revelation 12:12

“For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect--if that were possible.” Matthew 24:24

I believe we must also expect, acknowledge and encourage the presence of God's Holy Angels in these Last Days. I don’t think it hurts to thank your Angel for looking after you but we are warned against Angel Worship. The New Age Movement exults Angels above their status and as Christians we mustn’t go there.

Angels outnumber demons 3 to 1 so be encouraged for there are more with us than with the enemy. The Bible says that a 3rd of the Angels were cast out of heaven and became demons, that means that there 2 thirds left and they are good and on hand to help us, protect us and prosper our way.

“Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his heads….His tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth.

The great dragon was hurled down--that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.” Revelation 12:3-4,9

There is an interesting passage in 2 Kings where the Prophet Elisha asks God to open his servant’s eyes to see all the Angels. The key verse is “There are more with us than with them.”

"Don't be afraid," the prophet answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them."

And Elisha prayed, "O LORD, open his eyes so he may see." Then the LORD opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” 2 Kings 6:16-17

God has given us Angels to minister to and for us while here on earth.

Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? Hebrews 1:14

“See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.” Exodus 23:20

“He replied, 'The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you and make your journey a success,” Genesis 24:40

Angels are mentioned all through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and they are mostly assisting God's People, leading us into blessing. Both Elijah and Elisha had Angels to help them in ministry. I believe there is going to be an End Time Revival called the ‘Elijah Ministry’ before the Great and Terrible day of the Lord with demonstrations of miracles and power, which will be with the help of Angels just as it was in the life of Elijah. This will be the End Time Church in action with the Power and Spirit of God.

In the Book of Revelation there are Angels everywhere and some of them were really huge. Revelation 10:1 says that one of them stood with His feet on the land and in the sea.

Angels are very powerful for just one Angel in Isaiah 35 killed 185,000 Assyrians who threatened Israel. “Then the angel of the LORD went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning--there were all the dead bodies!” Isaiah 37:36

In the last chapter of Revelation it says that the Angel of God will show His Prophets things to come. Pastor William Branham in the 1940s said that he had an Angel assist him in ministry with amazing results. One thing he had was100% accuracy with all the revelation gifts with miracles. He claimed the Angel of the Lord was helping him and could nothing without its presence.

“And he said unto me, these sayings [are] faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to show unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.” Rev 22:6

The Bible shows us that children have an Angel that looks after them and stands before God constantly.

"See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” Matthew 18:10

There have been many times that Angels have helped people unawares.

Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares". Hebrew 13:1-2

I have often felt a presence like fire when I have ministered and the psalms say that an Angel can be a minister of flaming fire. “Who makes his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire.” Psalm 104:4

“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;” Psalm 91:11

In the war of Rhodesia there were many times that Angels helped people. One incident was with a friend.

A pastor in our denomination was coming back alone from a conference in South Africa during the war. He was really feeling tired and needed to stop and sleep, but feared that he would be attacked by Terrorists if he did, being such a remote area between the border and Bulawayo. He decided to battle on through the night, but was falling asleep at the wheel. After nearly hitting a bridge he saw a huge Angel standing in the middle of the road before him. He stopped the car at its feet and the Angel put his hand down through the roof and touched the top of his head twice and then disappeared. It was as if a supernatural strength had entered into his body, and he was now wide-awake. He was sure that if he were to hit the side of the car door with his fist it would have flown off its hinges onto the road. When he finally got home to Gweru he decided to go to sleep, but couldn’t, so he stayed awake all through to the next day. He tried to sleep the next night as well and couldn’t either. It became apparent that it was the Angel’s touch. One night for each touch so he wondered what would have happened if the Angel had touched him on the head 5 times??

“Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.” Psalm 103:20

I feel this is a very important verse. It says that Angels hearken to the words of God. Are we not the mouthpiece of God here on the earth? I would like to suggest that as we speak on behalf of God, Angels respond to that word? I believe that God wants us to put His word in our mouths and speak it out on His behalf. When we do this, Angels listen and go forth to fulfill His word. It’s so important to fill your heart and mouths with God's word and as we do it encourages the ministry of Angels. If this is the case what is coming out of your mouth?

Another sobering thought is that when we speak negative words could it not encourage the ministry of those Fallen Angels (Demons)? Have you ever wondered why some people seem to have so much going wrong with them, its as if there is a curse on them? What are they confessing? I know sometimes God can allow us to go through a Job experience where our problems are nothing to do with what we have said or done, but for many their problems could be avoided if they didn’t confess such negative stuff all the time that demons can hearken too. Lets encourage the help of Angels in our lives.
